Pollen from my bees

Here is some local pollen I got from my bees yesterday. I am not the best at this ...but it might be Daisy, Blackberry,  etc.

Very cool though!

Gerstley Borate at Laguna

Here is an ad in Ceramics Technical showing that Laguna Clay has over 900 tons of Gerstley Borate.

Seems like it will last a few years more!

Almost a new sign

I had some extra spray paint so I decided to spray the flashing on the back of the lettering of my sign.  Like new!

Crusty Parmesan Herb Zucchini

½-1 cup Parmesan cheese—grated
1-2 Tbsp. fresh minced rosemary and thyme or dried—adjust accordingly
Smidgen of olive oil

Salt and pepper to taste

Preheat oven to 350⁰. Brush sides of zucchini with olive oil and place on foil-lined baking sheet. Mix cheese and herbs together in small bowl. Sprinkle on zucchini. Bake 15 minutes then place under broiler for another 3-5 minutes checking to make sure the cheese doesn’t burn.

Public Art Project- Pitch in and LEARN something!

Alex Irvine needs help with his public art commission in Asheville.  This is a great opportunity to contribute to public art and learn from a highly skilled sculptural tile maker.

Still looking for more interns.

This is the deal:

1. A minimum 3 hr time commitment. The more someone can volunteer the more I will teach them. I need help pressing tiles, rolling slabs and wedging clay. I also need help building the figure. At three hours it will mostly be grunt work.

2.  A minimum 6 hr commitment. I can teach press molding and some slab construction.

It is really hot in the day in this warehouse and working at night is preferable. IT IS ESSENTIAL that you can huck around a 25 lb bag of clay--it's kinda heavy. Some clay experience would be nice but is not necessary. Below are some process photos to let you know what you'd be getting into.

Thanks for looking. Call if interested: 301-655-9566

The BEST Glaze Class EVER !

I wanted to repost this announcement:

I am having a glaze class at The Bascom in Highland NC July 14-18, 2014. It is going to be a great class!  We have 14 so far but I want to get 16 or more because it is better to have more testers and more clay and glaze knowledge in the room!

Everyone will will testing three bases on three clay bodies in multiple firing (cone 05 , cone 6 reduction and oxidation and cone 10 reduction). This will give us THOUSANDS of results which we will examine together to try to understand. To do this yourself would take about 2 months of sustained work and will will do it in a fun atmosphere with plenty of laughing!!  If you know of anyone who is interested please pass this on!

This is the last class of this kind I will be running this year so don't miss out!  It will make all your dreams come true.

Rare- Lancaster Mixer in Black Mountain NC

Tom Bridges in Black Mountain NC has an old (and modified but working perfectly) Lancaster mixer that's used for ceramic or refractory mixes. It is from an explosive ordnance plant that made 40mm grenades and 203 grenade launcher. This thing will mix anything that's difficult to mix or is very stiff.   I just need to get the money I have in it - $500?

Help Charlie Brown save his historic pottery in Asheville NC

The Brown Family has been in the U.S.since 1700' and in Arden, N.C. 90 + years. We are Southern Traditional Folk Potters. That means each generation learns from the previous generation . Now we are 11 generations. We still continue Traditions, Tools, and other memorabilia as well. Our ancestors blood , sweat, and tears are intertwined into my hands and every part of my existence. I can not Imagine not doing pottery and working at my wheel. In 2000, We had to remodel inside and out as it was falling down around us and needed to be brought up to utility codes. That put a hefty mortgage on the building as it was like building a new building due to all of the structural and roof repair. Life and taking care of parents found us refinancing ourselves into a refinancial hole and would happily do it again. In the downward spiral we lost slowly, first the life and health insurance , our assets, our house, and now we are down to the savored pieces of family pottery. We are in need of equipment and clay and supplies to be able to continue. Now the shop is all we have left with my family(wife and 2 boys) and a God given talent and our heritage .The shop is our home with no where else to go and very little family left. I can not afford help so I swallow my pride and say"Deeply any help would be truly and humbly appreciated". "The Brown Family"

Attention Potters! This is going to be a great workshop.

Influential Imagery

Here's some of the pictures I was going through to prepare for my artist talk at Flow last week.  It was great to revisit these photos.  They give me so many ideas.  The Flow summer Artist talk series is pretty sweet.  Sangria, refreshments and an artist talking about their inspiration, process, aspirations.  Next month's talk features clothing designer Lisa Mandle on July 10, 6pm.
