text-align: center;">Join me for an afternoon of art making to get in the mood for spring! I will demonstrate the process I use to create the distinctive imagery on my pots using painted wax resist and slips. Taking inspiration from spring ephemerals blooming, cherry blossoms flowering, and bulbs bursting forth from the ground, students will learn to create their own botanical images on both paper and pottery. The workshop fee covers all materials, including ink and paper, a pair of pre-made bud vases for each participant to decorate, and a spread of springy hors d'oeuvres to fuel our explorations! The pieces will be fired after the workshop in the same wood burning kiln I use to fire my work, and will be available to pick up at my studio or can be shipped for a small fee. This workshop is suitable for total beginners, or for clay artists looking to add another technique to their toolbox. Educators and students (high school and above, must be 16+ to take the class) receive 20% off the price of the workshop with the code LEARN.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Sign up <a href="https://www.christinabendo.com/store/p987/Botanical_Bud_Vases_Workshop-March_16th.html">here</a>!</div><br /><p></p>Tori Motylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17017443773603153269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6638497050839732163.post-71956000713324663262024-02-12T20:30:00.003-05:002024-02-12T20:30:48.458-05:00Call for Entry <br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFWsQUbKb__MOn73lgl9JWRI1KvRgkKn6dU2qsG9Nv_i9gz3KVT5lHjpO1rt__E1dHyxKVjCDltRYyRZWoQeOOeK1FHaukm2sd6l2LQkFEKeVZvhNfnT5Lt-GKMT8aGiIKpgW9DUf1YNq82cv5Gsn5ro6ScYzwrJkamYNeI3fvRaOKIaJXiYNKY17xH3A3/s1294/Ag%20in%20Art%20CFA%20Flyer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1294" data-original-width="1000" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFWsQUbKb__MOn73lgl9JWRI1KvRgkKn6dU2qsG9Nv_i9gz3KVT5lHjpO1rt__E1dHyxKVjCDltRYyRZWoQeOOeK1FHaukm2sd6l2LQkFEKeVZvhNfnT5Lt-GKMT8aGiIKpgW9DUf1YNq82cv5Gsn5ro6ScYzwrJkamYNeI3fvRaOKIaJXiYNKY17xH3A3/s320/Ag%20in%20Art%20CFA%20Flyer.jpg" width="247" /></a></div><p style="background: transparent; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;"><span data-preserver-spaces="true" style="background: transparent; color: #0e101a; margin-bottom: 0pt; margin-top: 0pt;">Hello! This year, the members of the Student Ceramics Association selected artist Tim Kowalczyk. The event will take place on Feb 26 (9:00am - 4:00pm) & February 27 (9:00am - 12:00pm). This event is free and open to the public!</p><p><br /></p><p>Tim is a studio artist and instructor at Illinois Community College. He was selected by the SCA because he specializes in Trompe-l'œil ceramics, making clay look like cardboard, metal, and many other materials. To achieve these effects, he uses a specialized clay body, elaborate hand-building processes, and transfer techniques for his surface design. Tim will focus his demo on functional objects. </p><p><br /></p><p>Artist Bio:</p><p>Since graduating with his MFA from Illinois State University in 2011, Tim has maintained an active studio practice from his home in Minonk, Illinois. For the past 7 years Tim has participated in a steady stream of juried, group, invitational, and solo exhibitions. He has received several awards including the Presidential Scholarship at Anderson Ranch Arts Center, Merwin Medal: McLean County 82nd Annual Amateur Show, and Best of Show: Water Street Studios Anniversary Show. Tim’s work can be seen in private collections, University collections, and in a recent American Craft Magazine article.</p><p><br /></p><p>Tim’s work has been featured on Colossal by Kate Sierzputowski, Ripley’s Believe It Or Not, TwistedSifter, BoredPanda, HOMECRUX by Monica Thakur, DeMilked, FactRiver by Tiffany, Nifymag.com, Whizual by Igor Stankovic, Laughing Squid by Lori Dorn, Cultura Inquieta, and Inceredibilia by Graziella Guglielmino.</p><p><br /></p><p>While this information is getting to you a little later than I planned (sorry!) we would be very happy to have you, your students, and/or anyone in your community attend. If you think you will join us, please just let me know and I will offer further instructions on getting to campus, parking, etc.</p><p><br /></p><p>Hope you all are very well!</p><p><br /></p><p>Kindly,</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Lindsay Rogers</p><p>she / they</p><p>Associate Professor, Ceramics</p><p>Department of Art and Design</p><p>East Tennessee State University<br /> </p>Tori Motylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17017443773603153269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6638497050839732163.post-2753296627602720182024-02-05T08:10:00.004-05:002024-02-05T08:10:28.119-05:00Zulu Ceramics Lecture at UNCA<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiZENzjp-yEHL9l_iiP_yz0y3isVI9mb7pTmz_a6Cf3rxRvgHx94ivR03o-9heQVIULgRM4FhBw9P1mDv8U472JifhttH0eB2LD_a_SPgDWi0Y9DPfiVVS2YrmY56ZzZzy7g3OntAquTpxMlrJ27e4NrptrkijMs-kgL_iv9WOBpBxvIvf6a1Oss2FFxo/s2400/Screenshot_20240205-080857.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2400" data-original-width="1080" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiZENzjp-yEHL9l_iiP_yz0y3isVI9mb7pTmz_a6Cf3rxRvgHx94ivR03o-9heQVIULgRM4FhBw9P1mDv8U472JifhttH0eB2LD_a_SPgDWi0Y9DPfiVVS2YrmY56ZzZzy7g3OntAquTpxMlrJ27e4NrptrkijMs-kgL_iv9WOBpBxvIvf6a1Oss2FFxo/s16000/Screenshot_20240205-080857.png" /></a></div><br /><p></p>Tori Motylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17017443773603153269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6638497050839732163.post-63414625109857232622024-02-04T15:03:00.000-05:002024-02-04T15:03:37.123-05:00February Clay Club: Empty Bowl make-a-thon at Penland<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDkN7VOC1HgDYIfRbiUNNsPGg2nmpKxUmZaWBYeB0ncQUBQu1Cp4_ZT8f49L2e73qVRzsa-PU36L6SXZ9w90h3aOcwyN7HsY-lFC3QBnAi3iJl4JsHqIrJYN9q3XbY7o8eUdhurMkZfIH7JeAEx8kxThyLvlkXi9KDLrlhJ2gw6mK90YYAYO3paOorwPg/s2304/EB%20Bowl-a-thon.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2304" data-original-width="1728" height="546" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDkN7VOC1HgDYIfRbiUNNsPGg2nmpKxUmZaWBYeB0ncQUBQu1Cp4_ZT8f49L2e73qVRzsa-PU36L6SXZ9w90h3aOcwyN7HsY-lFC3QBnAi3iJl4JsHqIrJYN9q3XbY7o8eUdhurMkZfIH7JeAEx8kxThyLvlkXi9KDLrlhJ2gw6mK90YYAYO3paOorwPg/w409-h546/EB%20Bowl-a-thon.jpg" width="409" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">This month, instead of our usual Wednesday meeting time, </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">we will be joining the empty bowl make-a-thon </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">for 2 Saturdays in the Clay Studio at Penland School of Craft!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"> Come out for one or both!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; word-spacing: 1px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">This annual event occurs to help support the local food banks </span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; word-spacing: 1px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;">in Mitchell and Yancey County.</span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; word-spacing: 1px;"><span style="font-family: verdana; font-size: medium;"><br /></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; word-spacing: 1px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Wheels are available for experienced throwers, </span></span></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-family: verdana;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #313131; word-spacing: 1px;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Hand builders are welcome too! McCarver uses the ceramics process and Biblical references to pottery to show different aspects of a relationship with God. The book shares McCarver's personal journey of faith and recovery (major spine surgery for scoliosis at the age of 14), and encourages readers to discover and develop their own artistic practice. “It's showing the readers that they themselves are creative and encouraging them to be creative and interact with God, the artist, alongside me in this experience. At the end of each chapter, there's a creativity challenge. It's open ended for any medium, however the reader wants to respond,” McCarver said. “My hope is for the reader to realize that everyone is creative because God is creative.”</div><div dir="auto" style="caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><br /></div><div dir="auto"><b style="caret-color: rgb(5, 5, 5); color: #050505; font-family: system-ui, -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, ".SFNSText-Regular", sans-serif; font-size: 15px; white-space: pre-wrap;"><i>Since there is no Clay Club Meeting this month, come out and hang with us at Reems Creek Pottery. One thing they're doing is that they're encouraging people in their community to take up crafts. These people lost everything in a catastrophic flood in the summer of 2022. It was terrible. (Here's a taste.) </p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>This spring, my colleagues, along with students, will visit partners in Kentucky.</p><p><br /></p><p>They are looking for any potential leads regarding kilns or molds that people may be willing to part with.</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>If you can be of help, please contact Doug Bradly - dbradley@warren-wilson.edu</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Thank you,</p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p>Leah Leitson</p>Tori Motylhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17017443773603153269noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6638497050839732163.post-87716467055314481612024-01-12T12:02:00.003-05:002024-01-12T12:02:58.715-05:00HCC Hosts Liz Zlot Summerfield<p> Haywood Community College Hosts Visiting Artist in Clay Liz Zlot Summerfield</p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Earthenware clay artist Liz Zlot Summerfield will present a demonstration and artist talk on, Monday, February 5, in Haywood Community College’s Creative Arts building. The community is invited to attend either or both. The demonstration begins at 9 am, the artist talk, at 12pm.</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Summerfield’s colorful, intimately scaled slab-built earthenware vessels have been featured on the covers of Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times magazines and in an instructional DVD produced by Ceramic Arts Daily. She has a Master of Fine Art from the University of Minnesota and teaches workshops across the country. Liz currently teaches at Mars Hill University and in her own, Double Island Studio in Micthell County, NC.</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Liz will demonstrate how she makes her inventive hand-built pottery forms and decorating techniques. She says, “The surfaces of my hand-built pots are adorned with subtle layers that are not meant to be recognizable on their own, rather viewed as the sum of their parts. These surfaces are achieved by using stencils, stamps, slip trailing, and brushing on several coats of color in the form of terra sigillata, underglaze, and glaze.”</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>During her noontime artist talk, Liz will share thoughts and imagery on what inspires her and how her work has evolved over the years.</p><p><br /></p><p> </p><p><br /></p><p>Questions?
