I had a great time demonstrating at the Highwater Clays - St Pete, Knowledge Clinic last weekend.
Not only because the weather was ideal & I got to swim in the ocean, but because I got to visit a very cool studio & meet some friendly clay people.

The Train Station is a super-sweet place. St. Petersburg Clay Company offers workshops, studio rental & Artist's Residencies. They've got an impressive kiln yard and are hosting a wood fire workshop Feb 11-22 with: Don Reitz, Matt Long, John Balistreri, Chris Gustin, Brenda

January “Writers at Home” Features Prose Readings by Diverse Authors.

Published writers from diverse professional backgrounds will read their works in the next installment of “Writers at Home,” the monthly series from UNC Asheville’s Great Smokies Writing Program. The writers are all part of the program’s invitation-only prose master class. Elizabeth Lutyens, who teaches the master class, will host the reading, beginning at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 15, at Malaprop's Bookstore/Café, 55 Haywood St., downtown Asheville. It is free and open to the public.

The professional backgrounds of the authors inform the short stories and novel excerpts that will be presented. Among those reading will be a lawyer, a potter, a computer executive, a religious studies scholar, and a chemical engineer who contributed to the panel of scientists awarded the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for their work on climate change. The readers are Lenny Bernstein, Bob Brooks, Marie Hefley, Terry Gess, Judi Goldenberg, Jennifer McLean, Beth Robrecht and Justin Watson.

Taking Tiles to a Whole ‘Nother Level

January 27-28, 2012

During this our second workshop with Nan Jacobsohn, we will explore Bas Relief Sculpture: a process that combines the best of two-dimensional and three-dimensional techniques. Sculptural tile, or Bas Relief, is a challenging alternative to the flat tile. We will learn how to sculpt vibrant, exciting surfaces in clay using various handmade texture tooles. Nan will make a plaster mold of a tile in order to press multiple copies. We will cover special considerations and techniques adhering tiles to walls to create large installations.

This demonstration workshop will equip us to return to our studios and explore this intriguing technique within our own work!

Help with Raku

I've heard that clay bodies with a lot of iron are not suitable for raku and will even blow up. I've also read that for pit-firing, "get a clay suitable for raku firings. The best color results can be achieved with iron bearing, or red clays" which implies that red clays are suitable for raku.

Do you or anyone following the clay club blog have experience with raku firing of iron rich clay bodies?

I'd appreciate learning from anyone's success or mistakes.

In order to suit the needs of a variety of artists and maintain an atmosphere of momentum and diversity, the Red Lodge Clay Center offers two residency options. Year-long residencies run from September 1st through August 15th. Short-term, proposal based residencies ranging from one to eight weeks, are considered from October 1st through July 31st. Please submit separate applications if applying for both residency options.

The year-long residency is ideal for committed individuals in transition from post baccalaureate studies to graduate school, as well as those pursuing the development of professional artistic careers. Self-directed ceramic artists searching for the time, space and resources needed to explore new ideas and create new work will enjoy the rural mountainous setting. Accepted residents will be provided with studio space, housing, utilities, and a monthly stipend in exchange for twenty hours of work per week at the Clay Center. Responsibilities will include assisting in the retail operation of the gallery, teaching community clay classes, as well as cleaning and maintenance of the studio and gallery. Residents will be responsible for personal living expenses, as well as all material and firing expenses. The application deadline is February 1st.

C: People always make the mistake of thinking art is crated for them. But really, art is a private language for sophisticates to congratulate themselves on their superiority to the rest of the world. As my artist's statement explains, my work is utterly incomprehensible and is therefore full of deep significance.

H: You misspelled "weltanschauung."

Blue Underglaze

I'm in search of a dark blue underglaze with good brushability. I want it to behave like ink painting- to be able to dilute to get value & maintain good brushability that is visible when painting on bone dry.
I've tried 2 different shades of Amaco's LUG series, but don't like the consistency, or visibility. I've also tried cobalt oxide with gerstley borate & frit, which brushes better and depth is more visible.
Wondering if anyone has experience with other commercial underglazes or recipes to share?

Virginia Creeper Trail

Since it was sooooo nice that past few days, I decided to take a ride on the Virginia Creeper Trail. As you will note in this photo from Damascus VA where I parked, I probably learned that you should plan out the ride so that you get back before dark. "The woods are lovely DARK and deep", wet too!

Anyway a great time and nice little tree to pot it off.

demonstration workshop covering throwing, altering, and decorating
techniques used for her functional stoneware pottery.

Using a momentum wheel, allowing for a slow forming pace, she
completes altering and slip work on freshly thrown clay. She will
also cover designing pots and slip use intended to be enhanced
by soda vapor and wood firing. She will present slides and discussion
of her work and artistic development.

Classic Shortbread

Made these Classic Shortbread Cookies for the Club last night. Martha Stewart does have some good recipes. She beat out Cook's Illustrated Shortbread.

Classic Shortbread

Makes 8 wedges

Ingredients:

2 cups all purpose flour

1 1/4 teaspoons coarse salt

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter at room temperature, plus more for the pan

3/4 cup confectioners' sugar

Directions:

Sift flour and salt into a bowl; set aside. Put butter into the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Mix on medium-high speed until light and fluffy - 3 to 5 minutes. Gradually add sugar; beat until pale and fluffy, about 2 minutes. Reduce speed to low. Add flour to mixture all at once; mix until just combined.

Preheat oven to 300 degrees, with rack in upper third of oven.

Using plastic wrap, press dough into a buttered 10-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom. With plastic on dough, refrigerate 20 minutes. Remove plastic wrap. Cut out a round from center using a 2 1/4-inch cookie cutter; discard (or eat...honestly, Martha, sometimes I wonder). Put cutter back in center. Cut dough into eight wedges with a paring knife. Using a wooden skewer (a fork messes up the dough and makes it crumble), prick all over at 1/4-inch intervals.

Bake until golden brown and firm in center, about 1 hour. Transfer pan to a wire rack. Recut shortbread into wedges; let cool completely in pan. Cookies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature up to 2 weeks.

Had a great time at Clay Club last night. Alex Irvine gave a talk about the wall mural he and Kathy Triplett made and installed at Odyssey in Asheville, NC

Wanted to thank Marian Parkes who organized everything (including the 12 Bones), Brain and Odyssey,and Alex and Kathy!!

It was a great presentation and showed the thought and work involved in this year long project! Outstanding!

Here are some of the cups for the cup exchange. The only complaint I had with this method (putting them in bags) was that we didn't get to see all the cups. So next time we have to set them out and look at them and then we can bag them. Just missed seeing 40 different cups.

I just wanted to post these cups I recently got out of a kiln to show you how difficult glazing is even in the best of times. I glazed these all the same. They are Pinnell Celadon inside on porcelain and then the next day I dipped the bottom in Val's Satin Black about an inch or so . Then I dipped the top in Daly Red, then dipped it in Daly with Titanium and last I dipped the top 1/2" in Val's Satin Black again.

Then I fired them on the same shelf in the same kiln.

They all look fine but some are hotter and more runny, some are a bit underfired and stiffer and some are about right.

No wonder people use Rhodes 32!

Kiln Door Ideas NEEDED!

Hello!

I am hoping to hear some good ideas for my kiln rebuilding project, and I think this might be the right place. I am rebuilding a soft brick, propane, catenary arch kiln but my problem is the door design.

In the past I have had a free standing door frame and I have stacked bricks into the doorway. I've seen bricks mortared together into larger units and stacked into the doorway. Any other good ideas?

I don't want any brick dust in the kiln!

Chromium Oxide

I have a question...., is there a difference between Green Chrome Oxide and Chromium Oxide? I'm ready to do some test tiles (trying to get a burgundy or cranberry like color). The recipe calls for Chromium Oxide. I have some Green Chrome Oxide in stock and Highwater said they don't carry Chromium Oxide/don't know what that is, so I starts thinkin' to myself that these two might, in fact, be the same thing. (This wouldn't be the first time that this kind of thinking has led me astray, so I thought I'd ask!)

Empty Bowls

As many of you know, CNN sent a reporter and a cameraman to the Empty Bowls studio last month. They spent a day interviewing us and filming Empty Bowls friends and supporters Paulus Berensohn, Cynthia Bringle, John Britt and Claudia Dunaway. They then visited and filmed the Dig In! Yancey Community Garden in Burnsville and spent the evening at the Empty Bowls dinner held to raise money for the Dig In garden. The event was great and very successful. Here is an example of the diet Cheryl and I have been on for about a year. Low carb, low sugar. It sounds horrible but it is amazing how easy and tasty it is! This doesn't look bad, does it? Chicken, mixed veggies and black beans. And it is easy to make and you don't get hungry after two hours. You feel good!

And the way it works is you get a splurge day once a week. You can eat anything, all day and so you don't feel deprived. You can always wait a couple of days for dessert!

Waste Oil Burner for sale

Hello,

This winter I plan to sell my complete waste oil burner set up, which
includes two burners, pumps, tanks, etc. Basically everything needed to
fire just about any size kiln to any temperature, with any kind of oil
including waste vegetable oil, motor oil, transmission fluid or even home
heating oil/diesel/kerosene.

It can burn solidified vegetable oil on the coldest day in winter.

I did about 200 firings to cone 11 with it and my business simply out grew
the need for it so I am switching back to gas. I still have quite a bit of
oil to burn before I can sell this set up so I am just putting the word out
here on clayart now to see how many responses I get. This would give
someone chance to come see it firing if they are seriously considering it
but want to see how it works.
