Join instructors and residents as we take the plunge into the exciting world of glaze testing.

Learn the differences between oxidation and reduction, cone 6 and cone 10 from glaze master John Britt who literally wrote the book: "The Complete Guide to High Fire Glazes" and his forthcoming The Complete Guide to Mid-range Glazes: Glazing and Firing at cone 6" book will be released in September, 2014.


*Every participant should plan on bringing 2-3 small bisque fired pots

Day 1 GLAZE: Participants work in teams glazing and loading small bisque pots and test tiles into both oxidation and reduction kilns to be fired to cone 6.

Each team will be furnished with bisqued test-tiles an a pre-made base glaze with which to make tests of various colorants. In addition, each team will be led by a Clay Art Center instructor.

Day 2 FIRE: Both an electric oxidation kiln to cone 6 and a gas kiln to cone 6 reduction. John will give lectures andexplanation of glazing, the glaze chemistry process and firing. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in discussion with John Britt and CAC instructors.

Day 3 UNLOAD: Assess results, compare notes and discover the magic of glaze chemistry!

Explore texture, line and color as a way to blend your ideas with tactile discovery. Be ready for action packed days filled with the sharing of information, ideas, techniques and thoughts on professional practice.
