April and May Clay Club: Saturday meeting and Clay Olympics!

Here’s what’s coming up in April and May:

April Clay Club will be at Cat Jarosz’s studio in Leicester on Saturday, April 7th from 6-8pm. I’ll post more details closer to the date, but please note the special time and make plans to join us!

May Clay Club will be at The Village Potters in Asheville on Wednesday, May 9th from 6-8pm. Lori Theriault and the rest of The Village Potters are organizing a Clay Olympics. (It’s been a while since we’ve done this - check out the first Clay Club Clay Olympics here: http://ncclayclub.blogspot.com/2013/01/clay-olympics-at-odyssey-center-for.html) The Olympics will have an Empty Bowls theme, and one hope is that folks will commit to making bowls for Empty Bowls events (either the Asheville Empty Bowls in September or another Empty Bowls event in your area). Judges will include Alisa Hixson from MANNA FoodBank and Melissa Weiss.

We need sponsors for prizes for Clay Olympics winners! If you’re interested, please let me know (amy@amywallerpottery.com).

Thanks to Cat, Lori and everyone who’s involved in organizing and hosting these meetings!

"Keep Asheville Creative" Arts Market Survey

The Center for Craft and Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce have are conducting a survey to “quantify affordable housing and space options for Asheville’s artists, makers, performers and creatives. The Arts Market Survey, with a tagline of 'Keep Asheville Creative,' is the next step to addressing community need as part of a bigger project to develop live/work, mixed-use-model development for the creative sector in Asheville.”

FAQ from the survey website:

What are we doing?

We are working to create affordable artist housing and work space solutions in Asheville and we need your help!

Why do you need me?

Your voice is critical in helping us quantify the demand for space and prioritizing the types of spaces, features and amenities that will be considered for the project. Other local development efforts may also be inspired by the survey results.

How can I help?

TAKE THE SURVEY AND TELL YOUR FRIENDS! (Download media kit here) Click the survey link(s) above to take the survey(s) that pertains to you. Each survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and may be taken at separate times. Both are best viewed on a computer, laptop, or other device with a large screen. At the end of each survey, please click on the "Submit" button to ensure that your responses have been recorded. We greatly value your time and perspective!

Should I take both surveys?

No, if your circumstance is fully reflected in one of the survey descriptions. Yes, if you have different individual and business/organizational space needs.

Who is involved?

The Center for Craft and the Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce are working in partnership with dozens of local arts and creative organizations, The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, City of Asheville, UNC Asheville, and Artspace, a national nonprofit leader in developing affordable space solutions for artists and creatives. Please join us!

What’s the idea?

To create permanently affordable artist housing and studio/work space in a mixed-use arts development. The project could include space for creative sector organizations and businesses. For additional information and background, please read these FAQ questions or click HERE to view the preliminary feasibility report that Artspace published in August 2017.

Who is funding this?

The Arts Market Survey has been generously funded by: The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, City of Asheville, Center for Craft, Ted and Senator Terry Van Duyn, Duke Energy Foundation, HomeTrust Bank, Dana and Jana Stonestreet, Asheville Area Chamber of Commerce, and Diamond Brand Gear.

Pottery wheel and kilns for sale in Sylva, North Carolina

3/22/18 update: some of these items have been sold. The potters wheel and Paragon kiln are still available.

Bernie Velluti has the following items for sale:

On the first page are the working pieces that have been in use until recently. The Jewelry/test kiln has 3 or 4 shelves that fit it that I will include with it. The wheel also has a lever to control the speed of the wheel as well as a foot pedal. (Click on the flyer to enlarge it or download a pdf here: https://goo.gl/EVbcT5)

On the second page are pictures of 2 different kilns that have been in my storage unit for a couple of years, they both need to be reworked. I tested the continuity on the elements on the larger kiln and it measured consistent resistance. I’m sure if someone wants to rebuild them they would want to replace the old elements with new ones. Which are listed in as well. These units belonged to my girlfriend and I think she intended to have them rebuilt but found her main work on smaller items. (Click on the flyer to enlarge it or download a pdf here: https://goo.gl/gdusdC)

I really would like to see these go to someone or place who can find a use for them either to rebuild or convert to gas or Raku firing. If they were to buy the new elements I’d give them the kilns. Would like to hear any ideas on what to do with the equipment or where to find a home for them.

Contact Bernie at bernievelluti@msn.com or 828-508-9958.

Potters of the Blue Ridge Teapot Challenge Tea Party on March 14th

The Potters of the Blue Ridge have invited Clay Clubbers to join them next Wednesday, March 14th, for their annual Tea Party. (This is happening at our usual meeting time and will take the place of a regular meeting for us this month.) Thanks to Cindy Pacileo, Bob Meier and all the Potters of the Blue Ridge for inviting us!

Potters of the Blue Ridge members will be unveiling the 13 teapots they made for their Teapot Challenge. They each made a teapot body, handle, spout and lid from cone 6 clay, then exchanged parts so they got none of their own, took them home and crafted a teapot out of mismatched parts. The teapots will auctioned off at Watauga High School's annual Empty Bowls event benefiting their local food bank.

The tea party will take place next Wednesday, March 14th, at 6 pm at Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery and Studio in Boone. Please bring hearty finger foods and drink to share.

Doe Ridge Pottery Gallery and Studio is located at 585 West King Street, Suite D in Boone. The studio is right downtown, with free parking after 5 in the lot beside and behind the studio. The main entrance is on King Street and down a flight of stairs, but it's easier to park in the lower part of the parking lot next door and come in the back door. Directions available here: http://doeridgepottery.homestead.com/contact.html

Carpooling: Mitchell and Yancey county folks: I’ll be going from Bakersville if anyone would like to ride with me. Asheville and other area folks: let me know by email, or leave a comment here on this blog post or on this post on Facebook and we’ll see what we can coordinate.

Questions? Contact Cindy Pacileo at cindy@cindypacileo.com. You can also contact me at amy@amywallerpottery.com or at 828-467-1183.

See you next Wednesday!
