Clay Club March 2, 2011 6:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Yo clubbers, it’s cup making season again!
Join us in Penland’s clay studio Wednesday, March 2 from 6:30 to 8:30 for an evening of merriment, pizza, and lots and lots of clay cylinders.
Each year the Penland clay community gathers together to make close to 500 cups with each cup to be given to a guest at Penland’s Annual Benefit Auction. We’ll have wheels set up for those who would like to throw or, if throwing is not your thing, we’ll have leather-hard cups ready for handles or for decoration. Or just hang out, look good, and eat pizza.
You can also check out the new clay studio porch! Stoneware and pizza provided.
Please bring something to drink (Penland rules state that we can’t have alcohol inside the studio, so the beer will have to remain outside) or any dessert items you would like. If you have any questions, please call Susan Feagin, 828-765-2359, ext. 29. Hope to see you there!

Clay Club at East Fork Pottery Feb. 16th

I just wanted to officially invite everyone out here to eastern Madison County this Wednesday for clay club at my place! I am going to pretend it is summertime and fire up the old pig cooker and bbq a few chickens. Aim to arrive around 6 and we will do a quick tour of the work shop and kiln and then go down to the house to eat and drink and be merry.
- If there is interest I would love to do a short coil and throw demo. I will be making big pots this week and so there will probably already be a pot on the wheel. But only if there is interest.
- If people want to bring side dishes and/or beverages that would be fantastic. I will have some beer and wine on hand but it has never hurt to have more of either.
- A last note would be to bring shoes you don't mind getting muddy. The workshop is still a bit of a construction site and if the weather is rainy or warm there will be mud. If you are lucky I might make a few more walk boards to avoid that "old mountain black dirt".
It is a quick 35 minutes from Asheville.

Directions are as follows:
- From Asheville head out of town on 26 towards Johnson City.
- Take Exit 11 and turn left.
- Head through Mars Hill and stay on 213.
- Once out of town continue about 3 more miles and at the bottom of a large hill take a sharp right onto Bone Camp
- Follow Bone Camp another mile or two, over and down a large mountain, until it goes over a small bridge and dead ends into East Fork Rd.
- Turn Right onto East Fork.
- Take your next right onto Ras Grooms Rd and follow until the pavement ends at my mailbox. My driveway is on the right and there is a small white farmhouse with red trim.

Hope to see you all there! Give a call if you get lost or have and questions 978.660.8032
All the best,
Alex

Skulls
Just got back from doing a demo at Odyssey for Master's of the Mountains. It is a really interested group and some wanted more on this skull series I am working on.
I sculpted a human from a real skull, then I made a mold so I could either slip cast or press mold it. I usually press mold it as I don't make that many. Then I add parts like Zygomatic bones and work on extracting teeth. Then cut the skull cap and put in a flange for a lidded skull or just turn the cap for a skull cap incense burner.
I will then put on white slip or a crackle slip and rub in some oxides and fire. Then I will see if it is realistic and add more oxides or stains and refire until it is right. I am working on glazing some and then sandblasting.

Etymology or Fish Sauce
We had a question on the origin of the term "fish sauce" as it is used in pottery- a white slip.
Tony Clennell replied:
Every one in Utah (University of Utah) seemed to eat fish sauce with their fish which
was a 50/50 mixture of ketchup and mayo.
We used a fish sauce dipping slip in the wood kiln that was, if I remember correctly,
Fish Sauce:
50 Redart
50 Kaolin
(I threw a hand full of nep sy just because!)
Hope this explains fish sauce.

The Clay Club has reached a milestone today - 357 Followers. This may not mean much in the scheme of things or in the overall blogisphere. But for us, it means that we are tied with Michael Kline's Sawdust and Dirt blog for the first time in the almost three years that we have been posting.
Pretty soon Michael will have to rename his blog: Sawdust and in the dust .
If anyone has events to post or upcoming shows or just interesting shit you are doing it would be nice to see what everyone is up to as Spring approaches!!!
