Soda Firing Workshop

Intimate Fire Retreat –  Soda Firing Workshop

This one week workshop will allow participants the opportunity to engage deeply with the firing process, exploring their own desire to understand this part of the ceramic process.   We will focus on the details and choices to consider when using a soda kiln as a primary tool for finishing your work or understanding the flow within the kiln.  Participants will bring bisqueware to the kiln and will join in the entire process including loading, firing, and especially unloading and discussion of results.

Discussions around the kiln may cover a range of topics:
kiln firing theories, kiln design and building considerations, and thoughts on the lessons drawn from 20 years of watching the flame and riding out the studio work cycle. This experience is ideal for those who may want to gain a first hand experience of the intricacies involved in a successful firing, and would be great for someone with no experience wanting to explore the process in a guided manner.

While the kiln cools we will spend time in the studio with demonstrations of wheel throwing and handbuilding techniques, as well as taking advantage of the location in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina to visit a local treasure or two.

Currently I am planning on loading my cross draft soda kiln, it holds about 20 cubic feet of stacked wares.

It will be fired in about 24 hrs +/-
We will use either wood, or propane, or both.

My firings typically involve reduction, a generous amount of soda, and often a reduction cooled atmosphere.

Each week will have 4-6 participants sharing the kiln space.

Cost for the five day workshop is $595 , which includes around 4-5 cubic space of bisqueware, use of slips, glazes, wadding, etc

Being in the flow state is a form of deep concentration that leads to greater connection to material, process, and craft. With William Baker, explore techniques for developing the frame of mind that welcomes flow. Discussion and demos will help us mine personal strengths through a series of conversations, questions, and demonstrations  in clay. Conversations will begin to build a tool box to access flow state thinking.
