In Search of an Apprenticeship

Gabriella Schmid was a student of mine at the University of Florida in 2011. She is seeking a studio assistantship in the WNC region. See her message below.  - Lindsay Rogers

My name is Gabriella Schmid and I am looking for a studio potter in need of an apprentice! I am finishing up my last year at the University of Florida studying Ceramics.  I would love to get hands on experience with established studio artists and believe it would be a very valuable opportunity for me.

At the University of Florida my professors have been Nan Smith and Charlie Cummings for the past two years. This semester I have been interning for Charlie at the Charlie Cummings Gallery in Gainesville, Florida. I have also always been interested in glassblowing and have had to take my own initiative to experience glass outside of school, due to the fact that my university doesn't offer any glass courses. I have been to Penland School of Craft twice within the past two summers and was instructed by Marc Vandenburg (flameworking) and Jen Elek (glassblowing). In St. Petersburg, Fl, I have interned for Charlie Parker, a studio potter at Charlie Parker's Pottery, and Christian Zvonik, a studio glassblower at Zen Glass. Combining both glass and clay into functional objects is something I have been working on this year as part of my University's Scholars Research Program.

My work focuses on the nurturing aspects of pottery, food, and communityAs a ceramicist, I aspire to explore the idea of collective consciousness through the use of functional pottery, which serves as a material that bridges society. If you have any information regarding studio assistant opportunities please contact me at gschmid@ufl.edu. Thanks!

Maybe tell a little more about your skills and knowledge and what you can offer to a potter instead of just who you know? I mean this in the nicest way. Good luck to you!

You could check out Starworks in the Seagrove area if you are interested in both glass and pottery.
