Just tell him I notched each of the horizontal and vertical boards half way so they interlocked and then back it with plywood.

Did you do that with a table saw or by hand?

I actually used a radial arm saw but don't recommend it! I marked and clamped the boards and then cut, then chiseled them out. It was nothing short of a miracle.

Someone with the proper equipment could use a table saw with the large blade to cut it once.
