Laser level controls rustic potter

One of the fun things we learned last night was that Alex uses a laser level as a "caliper" to measure lids and make plates the same size.  
(See red dot below.)

 The laser is mounted above the wheel - as so....

verrrrrrry clever! does that need to overhang the wheel so it points about straight down in order to keep angle errors from occurring at different heights?

The board the laser is sitting on is hinged so it can be moved horizontally into the needed location.
