Treadle Wheel built by Doug Gates.

I have had this wheel since the summer 2007 and it has seen very little use.  The wheel is built from Ash, and has the optional shelf included.

Doug is a fantastic craftsman, and his wheels are amazing.  I simply do not have the time or space for it right now.  I paid around $2500 for it,  I would like to get $1700 or best offer.

The wheel is located in Clearwater, Florida, but I could bring it as far north as Gainesville, FL.

More information about Doug Gate's treadle wheels can be found at his website

Soda Chicks and Chet Annual Sale Labor Day Weekend 2013

The 11th annual “Soda Chicks and Chet” pottery home sale is an event coming to the mountains of Western North Carolina this Labor Day weekend, Saturday August 31st and Sunday September 1st.

The open house highlights the work of five nationally known ceramic artists at Fork Mountain Pottery in Bakersville NC. Local potters Gay Smith, Suze Lindsay and Kent McLaughlin will host Matthew Metz from Alfred Station, NY, and Holly Walker from Randolph, VT.

Matthew is well known for drawn and carved imagery using porcelain clay to accent his distinct and personal language. He is inspired by historical folk pottery and early American decorative arts such as quilts and face jugs. This is evident in his patterning and use of contrasting positive and negative design on each pot.

Holly, a former Yancey county potter, forms her earthenware pots by pinching up layers of coils using a hand-building technique that does not involve the potters wheel. Holly’s surfaces are layers of many colors of slips and glazes applied in an abstract painterly approach.

The “ Soda Chicks”, Gay Smith and Suze Lindsay, use salt and baking soda to glaze the surfaces of their pots. Both “Chicks” have glaze palettes ranging from rich browns to brilliant turquoises to enticing greens. Kent McLaughlin (nicknamed Chet) also makes functional pottery for daily use glazed with high fire reds and yellows that reflect the fertile grounds surrounding his mountain home and studio.

It is a great gathering and celebration of the pot for clay lovers across the country. Come meet the potters, see a large selection of work from each one, nibble on yummy appetizers, and enjoy this mountain setting.

Hours are 10 am to 6 pm on Saturday, and 10am to 5 pm on Sunday.
Go to: for more information about each potter, images of their work, and open house location.

    August Clay Club 2013

Had  a great Clay Club last night at CURVE studios.
Thanks to Maria Andrade Troya, Kyle Carpenter, and Karen Newgard for having us! And for having great barbecue and chicken grilled up!!

Thanks to our president, Emily Reason, for planning it.

And we  had a tremendous crowd.  Not sure how many but about 50 or 60?  (some one help me?)

I couldn't get a good photo but  we went around the room and introduced ourselves and after about 3 hours....we stopped.  Just kidding-it was nice to meet some new potters and of course plenty of old timers. So thanks for taking the time to come out and visit. It is nice to see everyone in person and not just on Facebook!

Next month- September will be at Robbie Bell's in Bakersville.
And then October at the Squeaky Wheel in Asheville.

If anyone has a topic or idea let me know.

I thought we should have a Demo-palooza - where we have 10 --5 minute demos . We did it once at Odyssey and it was a hit. maybe in November or December.

Don't forget to get ready for the 2nd annual Clay Olympics in January!!!!!!!

Weirdest thing the other day- SUN.  Here is a bee trying to land.

    Sad News about David McWilliams!

This is a very difficult post, but must be done, albeit through tears.

I learned of the passing of a long time friend, colleague, and former coworker yesterday, David McWilliams, who worked very closely with me and my husband for 15 years at Highwater Clays

Dave worked tirelessly for Highwater and was one of the most brilliant men I ever had the privilege and joy of knowing. Most of my artist friends probably remember him as well, because he was as helpful to our customers as he was as our friend. We could ask him anything on any topic and he always gave the right advice. He took photographs at Dennis’s and my wedding over 20 years ago. Dave helped us with personal advice--he enjoyed telling me what Dennis wanted for Christmas and helping me find it. What wonderful memories.

He helped me choose a new car when I needed one quickly, helped me choose tires for bad weather, and so much more I cannot list. He gave me great support when I opened my humble little gallery, by visiting, helping me in remodeling decisions, photographing, and attending the grand opening. Dave cared deeply for his family, he loved his wife, Jan, and children and was always concerned for their well being. Those children, Abby and Ethan, are thriving adults now and I am thankful that Dave was able to participate in both of their weddings.

This post is but a small tribute, (because there is more to say than could ever fit here), to a great man, gone too soon. My husband and I have grief for the loss of this wonderful person, for a time in our lives that is too far behind us, and our thoughts are with his beautiful family and our hearts go out to them during their time of grief. — feeling sad.

    Plastic Jesus Lyrics

Here are the lyrics to Plastic Jesus but there is also a reference to Ceramic Satan!
    Plastic Jesus

    I don’t care if it
    Rains or freezes
As long as I’ve got my
    Plastic Jesus
    Ridin’ on the dashboard
    Of my car

    Through my trials
    And tribulations
    And my travels
    Through the nation
    With my plastic Jesus
    I’ll go far

    Ridin’ down the thoroughfare
With a nose up in the air
    A wreck may be ahead
    But he don’t mind

    Trouble comin’
    He don’t see
He just keeps his eye on me
And any other thing that lies behind

    With my plastic Jesus
    Goodbye and I’ll go far
I said with my plastic Jesus
Sitting on the dashboard of my car

When I’m in a traffic jam
He don’t care if I say damn
I can let all my curses roll

    ‘Cos Jesus’ plastic doesn’t hear
‘Cos he has a plastic ear
    The man who invented plastic
    Saved my soul

An if I weave around at night
    Policemen think I’m very tight
    They never find my bottle
    Though they ask

    ‘Cos plastic Jesus shelters me
For his head comes off you see
He’s hollow and I use him like a flask

    Woa Woa Woa

    Save me

I don’t care if it’s dark or scary
Long as I got magnetic Mary
Ridin’ on the dashboard of my car

I feel that I’m protected amply
I’ve got the love of the whole damn family
Ridin’ on the dashboard of my car

    With my plastic Jesus
    I said goodbye
    And I’ll go far

And I said with my plastic Jesus
I said sittin’ on the dashboard of my car

    When I’m goin’ fornicatin’
    I’ve got my ceramic Satan
Sittin’ on the dashboard of my car
Women know I’m on the level
Thanks to the wide-eyed stoneware devil
Sneerin’ from the dashboard of my car

I see that he's losing power
    Sliding further by the hour.
I know just the steps I'll take,
I'll nail him up for old times sake,
Nail him to the dashboard of my car.
