GAS Kiln for Sale 2012

Last deal of the year!!!!!!!!!!!$3550.00

Ceramic Services CS09 front loading gas kiln. It is 9 cu.ft. with ITC 100 HT ceramic coating.  I purchased this kiln in 2006.  The cost at that time was $6,275.00 for the kiln, galvanized hood $1,298.00,  ITC coating $265.00.  Current pricing for just the kiln is about $3,200.00 more than what I paid.  I have fired it only 4 times.  I also have 6  12”x 24” Advancer shelves that cost me $175.00 each.  I have no idea how to price this package.  I do want to sell it and am hoping you can help me.
$3550.00 for all. You pick up - Cash Only!

Canon 50mm f/1.8 II lens for sale - $90 firm

This prime lens is great for photographing art as well as portraiture and taking natural looking shots.  It will focus as close as 18" from the subject.  The photos below were taken with this lens this weekend and were taken with natural light.  It takes a 52mm filter and will fit on any Canon DSLR camera.  If you're interested, contact me at mlparkes @

Edit to add:  I also have a 75-300mm III zoom lens for sale, if there is any interest.

Word of the Day

In 1976, Richard Dawkins, in his iconic book The Selfish Gene, coined the word “meme” for a similar concept:

Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation.”

I liked the reference to "ways of making pots". So you have wood fired pot styles, soda fired black and orange decorations, majolica styles, crystalline styles, etc. And these styles are in facts memes and are passed on either by apprenticeship, books and magazines, person to person or workshops. And now Youtube.

Pot on!

Clay Club Review 2- 2012

1.  Yes, we did sell a lots and lots of stuff on the Blog. There were some great deals and a lot of folks made new friends.

2.  We also had some great meetings, like at Alex Matisse's, Emily Reason's, Penland, John Britt's, TRAC, Crimson Laurel -Slide Lecture with Peter Callas, OOAK Gallery, Ron Philbeck talk at Western Peidmont, Mushroom Factory with Lynda Banner, and we started the year at Cynthia Bringles with a demo.

3. We had a fantastic show at TRAC!!!

4. Amy also worked on the possibility of a Collaboration Show but it is still in the works.

4. Lots of new videos from Clay Club demos and random idle chatter videos from a pottery freak (me) . (over 1100 followers and 173,000 views!)

5. Had a lot of kick ass food and posted recipes, I loved the NY Cheesecake as did Emily (See above).

6. Chili Cook-off which Kirk won ---again!

7. Trivia Night with prizes from Lark Books!

8. Had over 500 posts

9.  Had over 588,00 page views and 325,000 visits (since inception) We have been going in this new format for 5 years!!!!!

10 And finally, last but not least, I can't leave out the help that the Clay Club provided to the former Penland Coordinators in getting justice for years of mistreatment, and Federal Labor Law violations. It was a monumental achievement which we are still waiting to have resolved - but I am promised that by February they will wrap everything up. ( We will let you know the final outcome!)

So we will begin again in 2013!

As always- if YOU or SOMEONE you know, wants to be the New President - Emily is tired of all the work so feel free to step up. I am happy to let someone else take the reins of the blog or organizing Clay Club!!!!!

If anyone had ideas for meetings this year???

Or January?? I was thinking of doing a Clay Olympics???Anyone interested in hosting ??? (or I could do it at my place) or setting up activities? Throwing contests, coil building contests, etc. We have been talking about it for a long time!!

Let me know soon as it is scheduled for January 9, 2013.

Clay Club Review 2012

 Nora Thomas said...
Clay Club was responsible for finding a home for a used kiln and the cool part was a friend from your area came to see me in Florida to pick it up! It was a win-win!

And let's not forget all the fun, informative videos!

Thank you, Clay Club!

Glazing a plate

Here is a plate I glazed for a video showing how to glaze some plates. Hope I make it this week sometime!

It was an interesting combination of a satin black cone 6 oxidation next to an Oribe and also a Magruder Red (all cone 6 electric).

Word of the Day

Shelling- Flaking or peeling of a glaze or a glaze and slip. It is a defect in which the glaze falls from the body in flakes. It often occurs where there is a slip applied on the clay body (mostly on low-fired ware or on porous bodies). There is an insufficient bond between the glaze and the body and the glaze and some of the powdery slip flakes off after firing.

As opposed to shivering where there is a sufficient bond between the body after firing and the glaze flakes off or the glaze shear ways from the pot, sometimes taking parts of the clay body with it, creating very sharp edges.

"I can get it for you wholesale ..."

Wonderous Solstice to you clay people.
I really like people made out of clay!

Any tips on wholesale kilns?

I received a Regional Artist Project Grant to purchase a SKUTT KM1018 with 3 inch bricks. I have been shopping around for awhile.

Any body have any info. to help me pursue a "wholesale" kiln? Best deal I could get from Highwater is 20% off.

I am also open to a used kiln. I need to go either KM1018 or KM1022 (with 3 inch bricks).

The SKUTT KM1027 is not the right size for my needs.
(As far as I know, the top ring of the 1027 cannot be removed.)
If I am wrong, please tell me.

Gracias from Gluckin

Almond Cookies

1 cup of butter (two sticks-cold- cut into small slices)
¼ cup of sugar
1 tsp vanilla
2 cups of flour
½ tsp salt
¾ cup of sliced or chopped almonds
Cream the butter and sugar (5 minutes) in a mixer.
Add vanilla and gradually add flour and salt.
Add almonds.
Chill two hours (it likes to be cold or the balls flatten out).
Form into 1” balls.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet and cook at 325 for 15 – 20 minutes or until bottoms are brown.
Cool 5 minutes and roll in powdered sugar.

Eat them (Hide remainder so everyone else doesn't eat them).

Here is the new segment - Joke of the day. Today's submission is Susan Feagin:

Today's word is PENETROMETER.

It is the device used to measure clay (soil) wetness. So at clay companies they give you a softness rating, like 5.5 or 6.0 or 7.0 etc. Soft clay is 5.5.

From the Free Dictionary:

penetrometer  also penetrameter
1. A device for measuring the penetrating power of electromagnetic radiation, especially x-rays.
2. A device for measuring the denseness, compaction, or penetrability of a substance, such as soil, agricultural produce, or semisolid petroleum products. A penetrometer typically measures the resistance of the substance to penetration to a given depth by a weight-driven cone or needle of a given shape.

Clay Club Report Dec. 2012

Had some good fun at Clay Club last night. Emily hosted at the Marshall High Studios.  Thank you Emily for hosting. There was an excellent spread of food and great Barbecue by Emily.

Trouble in the corner!

Here is Emily showing the books that we had for prizes last night - courtesy of Thomas O'Hearn from Lark Books .
He brought a bunch of 500 Series as well as some other fine books from Lark! And he also showed us the new

500 Prints on Clay (March 2013):

But also had a copy of the forthcoming Letterpress Now book which looked beautiful.

Letterpress Now, by local author Jessica White (on sale January 2013):

Here is Emily asking questions for the Trivia Night.

Ashevillians — Lisa Gluckin here. My residency at EnergyXchange ended November 15th and I am now a resident at Grovewood Studios. I continue to live in Bakersville and work at Penland, so I am doing the commute thang.

I have been thinking — yes, I have been thinking ... oh no ... that it would be great to have a place to lay my head 3-4 nights a week this "winter" here in Asheville.

Anybody have an extra bed/room or know of someone who does?
$$, groceries, barter — so many possibilities.

CLAY CLUB December 5, 2012

Yo Clubbers,

Emily Reason will host the December Clay Club but has to do it:

This WEDNESDAY December 5th, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. at the Marshall High Studios in Marshall, NC.

We will have the CUP EXCHANGE and other TRIVIA NIGHT with prizes!!!

Come one and all!! Should be fun!!

P.S. (The Cup Exchange doesn't have to be a cup but more like any "object" , so think creatively about what you have laying around. Just something to swap. You could even bring an old used shitty cup from the cupboard as long as it is a Hamada made it.)

Emily will have a crock pot of pulled pork but just bring anything for the Pot Luck,

See you there!

Scythe and philosophy

A little off topic....But if you need some movies or books....

Saw the movie Anna Karenina yesterday and they had a scene in there on Scythe's and the basic philosophy of life. Great movie!

Also, some good books out recently. Saw them at Barnes and Noble:

"Assholes -A theory" by Aaron James which explains a lot of things.....

"Antifragile" by Taleb (Black Swan)

"The Signal and the Noise- Why most predictions fail but some don't" - Nate Silver
