Course Description

This workshop will be a general overview of ceramic glazes, focusing on but not limited to cone 10 reduction. It is designed for beginner to intermediate potters. We will discuss cones, kilns, firing dynamics and principles as well as applying those principles to various firing cycles. This will lead us into some basic classifications of glazes, like shino, copper reds, ash, celadon, temmoku, oil spots, etc. We will discuss how and why each type of glaze works and how you can achieve them. We will also fire a cone 10 reduction firing for celadons, shinos and copper reds.

Cress Kiln SOLD

About ten years ago I purchased a used Cress FX18C. I have never even plugged it in. I have some of the furniture. It has the Firemate control system and the Cress Clean Air System. The bottom is cracked, but I have been told it could be repaired. It is a small kiln, maybe 2 1/2-3 cubic feet. $150, located near Weaverville.

Group Order on Buckets??? Anyone interested??

We had a little accident in our studio that has convinced me I need to replace my 5-gallon glaze buckets. While hoisting a bucket filled with a new batch of glaze up to pour it into a 10-gallon container, the handle broke out of the bucket and the glaze spilled everywhere. What a mess! I have concluded that the plastic deteriorates over time with exposure to ultraviolet light, and I want to replace all our 5-gallon buckets as insurance against this ever happening again.

ULINE sells these buckets in 7 colors, but they have to be purchased in lots of 5 for each color. I'd like a mixture of colors. If anyone would like to order any of these we could save on shipping and each of us could get a variety of colors. Obviously these buckets have many other uses besides holding glazes.

The buckets cost $4.69 each, and the lids are $1.40. Both buckets and lids come in orange, black, yellow, blue, red, gray, and green (plus white and "natural," whatever that is).

Please get back to me if you're interested and I'll place the order if we get enough takers. Specify which colors and quantities you want, and whether you want matching lids or not. I'd like to place the order ASAP.

Bad plaster

I've got some plaster that's gone bad................what's the best way to get rid of it?

Re the Purple Crystal Glaze....

Jack just finished two salt firings in NY with that same base formula but using 4% RIO instead of 5% Cobalt carb. (can also use 4% rutile).  Got similar crystals but of course blue, not purple.  Posting a pic on light and dark clays.

Glaze Mixer

Don't know if everyone knows about Glazemixer.com but they mix up recipes and ship them to you dry.You add water and you are off.  That way people who don't want to buy and store all the chemicals can mix up glazes a lot cheaper than buying them wet from Duncan or other glaze suppliers.

And the best news is that they now print the recipes - so it is open source!

Couldn't be a better way to do things!!

Since things are a bit slow on the blog...So I would post my favorite little story. This is from:

Who is the boss

When the body was first made, all the parts wanted to be the boss.

The brain said, "since I control everything and do all the thinking, I should be the boss."

The feet said, "since I carry man where he wants to go and get him in position to do what the brain wants, then I should be the boss."

The hands said, "since I must do all the work and earn all the money to keep the rest of you going, I should be the boss."

And so it went with the eyes, the heart, the lungs, and all the other parts of the body, each giving the reason why they should be the boss.

Finally, the asshole spoke up and said it was going to be the boss.

All the other parts laughed and laughed at the idea of the asshole being the boss. The asshole got so angry that he blocked himself off and refused to function.

Soon the brain was feverish and could barely think, the feet felt like lead weights and was almost too weak to drag the body anywhere, the eyes grew bleary, and the hands hung useless at the sides. All pleaded with the brain to let the asshole be declared the boss.

Don't like any of their morals so I made up my own.

Moral: If you look down on others and treat them like shit, because you think you are the brains of the operation, be careful, because someday the tables may turn and you may get a lesson from the asshole!  


I think of the story like this-  the heart would be a CEO while the asshole would be the trash man, and the other organs other types of professions. So the CEO might think that they are the best, highest, but try running without the asshole, or the skin or the liver or pancreas, etc. ... So all the workers have value and one is not the best or the highest. And you are often surprised by the contributions of the (percieved) lowest employees.  

I remember the trash strike in New York. It didn't take long to (5 days in 1990 and 4 months in 2006) figure out that you should pay garbage men a living wage or the city will stink!

And now the NFL refree lockout!  Amazing how the owners changed their demands after three games!

I guess that is kind of a socialist mentality, that each worker has value, but we often forget it in America where the CEO's get millions and the trash men get shit.

Just figured out that if you have stale Cheerios (because if rains 2 inches every day) that you can put them in the microwave for a minute or so and then let them cool in the freezer and viola..you have nice crunchy Cheerios!

Just a reminder that the July Clay Club at Crimson Laurel on SATURDAY JULY 7 at 5 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. The slide lecture is at 5:00- 6:00 (or so) and then the Opening. And it is a really nice show. Lots of wood fired stuff!

We wanted to support Crimson Laurel and attend the Peter Callas Lecture at the Historic Mitchell County Courthouse in downtown Bakersville, NC.

It would be great to see everyone there to support this kind of event in Bakersville NC!

The lecture will include an overview of Peter's 40 year career, his 23 year collaboration with Peter Voulkos and a discussion of our international exhibition of wood fired sculptural ceramics that opens on July 1.  Andrew Glasgow, the retired executive director of the American Craft Council, will introduce Peter and offer opening remarks.  The exhibition will feature fourteen artists from five countries and we have also included a functional element that features eight great potters.  We will host a reception at the gallery after the lecture and we hope you will stop by and see the work.

Someone was asking for Shaner Red and green glaze recipes- Here are some. These are just slight variations like EPK or Tile -6 for the ball clay and more or less talc or bone ash. Test THIN on porc, stone ware and dark stoneware as well as medium and thick. I think the thin on dark stoneware is the most iconic (rust red with bits of yellow):
