Mica Gallery’s Featured Artist for August Focuses on Light

Mica - A Cooperative Gallery of Fine Art and Contemporary Craft – is pleased to present a special exhibition of Gay Smith’s ceramic works during the month of August.

Smith will be showing candle holders, menorahs, candelabra, containers to hold candles, and lamps. “Anything to do with light,” Smith reports. “I am passionate about creating vehicles that spread light in our world.” Smith describes her work as extraordinary pots for ordinary use, to be enjoyed every day. “I make pots on the wheel that celebrate the responsiveness of porcelain clay to spontaneous, yet thoughtful, manipulation of soft form and surface, and to the flames of my soda kiln that create vibrant colors leaving luscious marks on anticipated edges.”

Smith has been an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Penland School of Craft. Her sought-after workshops have been held at Penland, Haystack, Harvard, Findhorn, Scotland, among other venues.

Mica, located at 37 Mitchell Avenue, Bakersville, NC, is open daily, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. The gallery follows guidance from the CDC and state of North Carolina with regards to controlling the spread of Covid-19. July ClayClub Recap

July ClayClub was a great time where clubbers got a chance to eat some delicious food and not only watch a demo on two great techniques - transfers and screen printing - but also got a chance to try it out for themselves! Check out these great pictures of Rachel Smith demoing these two techniques, and the rest of us with our hands in clay and water and slip!

See you next month at The Village Potters for August Clay Club - more info to come.

New ClayClubber looking for equipment

Greetings! I am Emily Ankeney, my 16 year old son Jasper and I took a wheel throwing class at Odyssey Clayworks in the spring and we are both thrilled to continue our exploration. It had been 27 years since I had taken a hand building class in college and I forgot how much I love ceramics. If anyone happens to have a pottery wheel or other home studio supplies for sale, we are hoping to create a work space in our basement. I am an artist who has focused mostly on painting and I am also seeking a studio space in the River Arts District. My email is I look forward to meeting other clay enthusiasts from this group!
