Mica Gallery Featured Artists for July

Mica - A Cooperative Gallery of Fine Art and Contemporary Craft – is pleased to introduce our Highlighted Artist-Members for the month of July, Sondra Dorn and Teresa Pietsch.

Dorn is a mixed media artist whose paintings are reminiscent of abstract landscapes. “I generate ideas in several ways,” Dorn says as she describes visits to botanical gardens and examining objects under a microscope. “I take photographs while walking and driving around and ideas evolve just by working--one idea always leads to another--each a new discovery.” Dorn’s new work for the July Mica exhibition will feature black and white gel plate monotypes that she will work back into with color for a painterly, gestural final effect. Dorn was a Core Fellow and Resident Artist at Penland School of Craft. She lives in Asheville.

Pietsch finds imagery and inspiration by walking her dogs in the quiet of the woods. “Working in earthenware with colored slips,” she says, “allows me to respond to the textures and colors I see in all seasons. Each new piece I make and decorate is like a page from a sketchbook." Pietsch makes works that are objects of beauty and functional at the same time. Her cups, pitchers, vases and platters are her way of translating gardens onto a canvas. Her work, she reflects, “speaks to growth cycles and the passage of time.” Pietsch grew up in Washington State and graduated from Seattle Pacific University. After a residency at the Energy Exchange, she settled near Penland School of Craft.
