Mica Gallery’s Featured Artist for August Focuses on Light

Mica - A Cooperative Gallery of Fine Art and Contemporary Craft – is pleased to present a special exhibition of Gay Smith’s ceramic works during the month of August.

Smith will be showing candle holders, menorahs, candelabra, containers to hold candles, and lamps. “Anything to do with light,” Smith reports. “I am passionate about creating vehicles that spread light in our world.” Smith describes her work as extraordinary pots for ordinary use, to be enjoyed every day. “I make pots on the wheel that celebrate the responsiveness of porcelain clay to spontaneous, yet thoughtful, manipulation of soft form and surface, and to the flames of my soda kiln that create vibrant colors leaving luscious marks on anticipated edges.”

Smith has been an artist in residence at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, Montana and Penland School of Craft. Her sought-after workshops have been held at Penland, Haystack, Harvard, Findhorn, Scotland, among other venues.

Mica, located at 37 Mitchell Avenue, Bakersville, NC, is open daily, Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 12-5 p.m. The gallery follows guidance from the CDC and state of North Carolina with regards to controlling the spread of Covid-19.
