Engineering the large vessel with Tori Motyl

We are thrilled to host our own, Tori Motyl, a fearless and amazingly skilled potter!

Most of us know Tori because when she lived here in Asheville she was always serving our greater ceramic community while pushing her techniques and body work all the while.

It is really special that Tori has agreed to share these techniques during her brief return home to Asheville and The Village Potters Clay Center.

This is sure to be an exciting two-day demonstration focused on the art of making really, really big pots. Tori is a  graduate and apprentice of our Advanced Studies Program and former staff instructor, Tori first began exploring larger work while studying with Sarah Wells Rolland. Tori went on to create original larger work with commissions for Ralph Lauren where her bold vessels were featured in his retail displays. Tori recently moved to Vermont to apprentice with Steven Proctor known for his very large work. She now works full time in her personal studio in Vermont.

Over two days, we will experience the magic of throwing a monumental vessel 32" x 48" from start to finish while discussing structural design, throwing forms wider than your wheel, creating one pot that will fill your whole kiln, how to move the large piece, and incorporating technologies like CAD and CNC machining into her ceramic practice. She will also share how to modify your electric kiln to hold even taller pots. Tori has developed a confident and safe approach to large work that she will generously share throughout the workshop.

Whether or not you plan to work at this scale, this workshop promises to be inspiring as Tori creates a very large vessel while sharing stories, techniques, and her love of clay.
