I need a cone 6 clear recipe

I made Cherokee Indian masks with my son's 4th grade class using Odyssey house slips for color and now need a cone 6 clear to spray and finish up. While working with kids can be "havoc" (Ben's description), I love to see them work. Anyway, I'm going to single fire them sometime next week after they are dry. I thought I had a commercial clear, but it turned out to be white. I never use clear and am looking for an easy recipe. Can someone help?


BTW, I met Henry Pope and Mary Mikkelsen this morning when I went to pick up several boxes of Ellen Buff they were getting rid of. I had a wonderful cup of tea on the deck with them, and we talked for quite a while about pottery, firing and other topics clay-related. They are planning on coming to the Clay Club meeting next week.

There is a cone 6 clear in this month's Ceramics Monthly. I haven't tried it though.

Kari, someone posted this ^6 clear satin last week on Clayart. We're thinking of testing it soon at Odyssey. If you end up using it, let me know how it is.

Leach's Satin Clear Cone 6 Test. Cone 6 touching shelf. Mixed consistency
of milk.
This is a great smooth satin finish glaze. Waxy feeling with two thin
coats. Very clear, but will get milky clear with more than two coats. Very
nice glaze. Cobalt carb brush marks did not run over or under glaze. Best
satin clear I have ever found and tried. No crazing or pinholes on
Highwater Desert Buff clay. I did change her recipe to 100%. Should make a
nice base glaze also.

I'm in Asheville for the weekend so out of my studio, but I think I have all those ingredients at home. I guess I should review J.B.'s notes to see how it *should* turn out, eh?

Did I mention this will be an elec firing?

I like that it is satin, since the original masks seem to be matt. It's not like 4th graders would know the difference. I guess I should keep their expectations low. It's the right thing to do.

Most clears have to be applied pretty thin. You might try your commercial clear again, but put it on thinner. It might just work if you adjust the thickness.

Hi Kari. I know you have soo many recipes now you are going crazy. The C6 Clear I use here at Odyssey is easy peasy. It's a glass though.

25. Gerstley Borate
25. Soda Feldspar
25. Spodumene
25. Flint

I use it over oxides all tthe time. Fabu.
