Anyone know what kind of tree this is or the weird fruit/berry?

Your Magnolia tree has decided to fruit this year...the bulbous parts are the portions of the fruit that were fertilized, and the things that look like orange M&M's are the seeds.

It's one of the locally native magnolias, probably a Frazier or Cucumber Magnolia, but certainly in that group. I adore them. I think if I was forced to choose I'd actually choose them over the leathery leaved Southern Magnolias I grew up with. They are so much more delicate ....leaves, flowers and seed pods.

One of the many forms of Magnolia. The small bud to the right of the fruit is dead giveaway. It looks like an Asian variety, but there are native American magnolias like Magnolia Grandiflora of the South. I believe it is commonly called the Sweet Bay. That one is evergreen and has huge cream-colored flowers that smell of lemons. it blooms in mid -summer and is a huge tree. The one in the picture looks to be deciduous. I think the seed pod is just misshapen.

Best I can do without seeing the plant.

Noticed your weird tree photos on the Clay Club site. Those growths look like seed pods on a deciduous magnolia. If they look a lot different from the other seed pods on the same tree, they may be galls caused by an insect or fungus.
