Penland School of Crafts LGBTQ Scholarship Award
Jerry Jackson and Jeff Harris have established a new scholarship at Penland School of Crafts, the LGBTQ Scholarship Award. This scholarship “will provide a special work-study scholarship for a summer workshop at Penland for a student living in North Carolina.” The deadline is February 17th. Contact Penland Registrar Amanda Hollifield at 828-765-2359 ext. 1306 for more information. I couldn’t find this on the Penland website, but you can see the announcement above. (Thanks to Equality NC for posting this on twitter.)
For a little context: Penland is located in Mitchell County, North Carolina. In 2012, 83% of Mitchell County voters voted in favor of Amendment 1, the anti-LGBT* marriage amendment. Mitchell County’s state senator and representative both voted for the anti-LGBT* House Bill 2. Thanks to Penland for being a welcoming, affirming and safe space in this county.
Penland offers a number of scholarships. Here’s the overview page on their website (I’m guessing this new scholarship will be included at some point): penland.org/classes/scholarships.html
