HCC Hosts Liz Zlot Summerfield

Haywood Community College Hosts Visiting Artist in Clay Liz Zlot Summerfield

Earthenware clay artist Liz Zlot Summerfield will present a demonstration and artist talk on, Monday, February 5, in Haywood Community College’s Creative Arts building. The community is invited to attend either or both. The demonstration begins at 9 am, the artist talk, at 12pm.

Summerfield’s colorful, intimately scaled slab-built earthenware vessels have been featured on the covers of Ceramics Monthly and Clay Times magazines and in an instructional DVD produced by Ceramic Arts Daily. She has a Master of Fine Art from the University of Minnesota and teaches workshops across the country. Liz currently teaches at Mars Hill University and in her own, Double Island Studio in Micthell County, NC.

Liz will demonstrate how she makes her inventive hand-built pottery forms and decorating techniques. She says, “The surfaces of my hand-built pots are adorned with subtle layers that are not meant to be recognizable on their own, rather viewed as the sum of their parts. These surfaces are achieved by using stencils, stamps, slip trailing, and brushing on several coats of color in the form of terra sigillata, underglaze, and glaze.”

During her noontime artist talk, Liz will share thoughts and imagery on what inspires her and how her work has evolved over the years.
