Sculpting Emotive Animals with Katie Maloney: May 31st-June 2nd

Description
This workshop intends to provide both beginner and seasoned sculptors methods to achieve their animal sculpture ideas. We will draw on inspiration from a rich history of animalia ceramics and our own life experiences to create personal and narrative sculptures. Over the course of three days, students will build multiple sculptures to practice scale and detail while learning various techniques including the hollowing method and coil building to form larger sculptures. Katherine will individually guide students on technical aspects and how to portray emotion and character in their animals, particularly through facial expressions. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own aesthetic approach, whether realistic or whimsical, and challenge themselves to explore new ideas. Demonstration will also include methods for achieving textured surfaces such as creating feathers, fur, or designs using slips and oxide washes. While the workshop does not include a firing, we’ll discuss various ways to glaze and fire the completed sculptures, including how to ensure their durability living outside.
