Cotton Fields

On our drive to the Outer Banks, we passed a lot of these cotton fields and so stopped to have a look.

I have never really seen a cotton field in person...but this plant is really amazing.

That's a reminder of my very first job at the young age of nine. My uncle had large cotton fields and he paid folks to come in and hand pick the cotton. To pick the cotton one had to drag these long canvas sacks that had a strap that went around your neck and shoulder. Up and down the rows of cotton I went dreaming of the riches I would have at the end of the day. At the end of the day, the cotton in my sack was weighed out and I made the grand sum of 9 cents. Nine cents!

That was the end of my cotton-pickin' career!!

We were in Nags Head for Thanksgiving week and probably saw those same cotton fields on the drive.

Great plants!! Great pics. I remember seeing them for the first time on a drive through SE VA on the way to Norfolk.

John, That place is about to fall into the ocean! We were less than a mile south of you. Some friends have a cottage, and we have spent the past 6 Thanksgivings there. Too bad we didn't know you were right up the road!
