RIP Harvey Littleton

From the TRAC Mailing( which I cannot figure out how to link to): So here is an excerpt:

We are saddened by the loss of Harvey K. Littleton, age 91, who passed away at his home in Spruce Pine, North Carolina on December 13th, after a long decline.

Harvey was a visionary artist, teacher, and spokesman for the arts. He brought glassblowing from the factory into the studio, setting in motion the dramatic development of glass as a medium in contemporary art. His love of glass started as a child as he was the son of the first research physicist at Corning Glass Works. His impact and support of the arts was far-reaching. But, both Bess and Harvey supported so many efforts locally as well – including those of TRAC. We thank them both for all their support and for their leadership in our communities and in the greater art world. Pushing limits – always looking in new ways, exploring. Innovating.

On January 11th, 2014 the family will host a private celebration of the lives of Harvey, and of Bess, who died in October 2009 in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Bess Tamura Littleton and Harvey were married for 62 years.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations can be made to The Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Mitchell County http://www.hospicemc.com/how-you-can-help/donate/ that has provided invaluable support in the care for Harvey, and/or to the Penland School of Crafts “Harvey and Bess Littleton Scholarship Fund” http://penland.org/support/endowed_scholarship_funds.html that provides one full scholarship for a two-week summer session in hot glass.
